JENNIFER REIS — E-RYT 500, Kripalu School of Yoga faculty, Integrative Yoga Therapist and faculty member, LMT, Ayurveda and Shiatsu therapist, is one of the foremost teachers of yoga nidra. Jennifer is an authentic and spirited leader, who has been presenting dynamic retreats and teacher trainings for 20 years, as well as leading 200-hr Yoga Teacher Trainings in the Kripalu School of Yoga and Ayurveda. Creator of both Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® and Five Element Yoga®, Jennifer’s CDs have been the best-selling CDs at Kripalu Center for ten consecutive years. Jennifer’s popular educational newsletter Radiant Being, has over 11, 000 subscribers worldwide.
Jennifer, born in Toronto, Canada, was raised in Calgary, where she enjoyed the growing up in the playground of the Rocky Mountains, fresh rivers, lakes and yes– lots of snow and ice! Naturally artistic, she graduated college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and worked as a professional visual artist in Canada before moving to the United States.
Jennifer’s last exhibition was at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA called Mohican Voices and Prayers. Utilizing arts council grants from Canada she was able to visit the first people MA and NY – the Mohicans – who had moved over 250 years ago, to their current location in Wisconsin. Jennifer brought stones from Monument Mountain, MA, and invited the Mohican’s to hold the stones and then speak to their ancestors and homeland.
Their recorded voices were played outdoors towards the Housatonic River all day and night for six months on the museum grounds. The Mohicans wrote their prayers and Jennifer transferred them to 30 large prayer flags that looked like arms and hands on flag poles that danced with the wind like a choreographed ensemble. To the Mohican’s this was a powerful ceremony that brought their voices and prayers back to their ancestral land.
The ‘artwork’ that carried the ceremony was gladly given to them after the exhibition, which they respectfully burned in ceremony to send the voices and prayers back to higher places. Now Jennifer is content with bringing her creative spirit into her teaching and developing Divine Sleep and Five Element Yoga.
Over the last fifteen years Jennifer has developed two important forms of yoga and meditation:
Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra has become one of the most prominent forms of yoga nidra meditation that includes a systematic approach to relaxation and deep transformation. Lying down or in seated meditation, one is verbally guided through all levels of being (the five koshic layers of being) for awareness of the whole being.
Five Element Yoga flows through Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether elements with vibrant yoga postures, breathing, hand mudras, self-massage bodywork, intention, and reflective questions, and creative expression through art making.
Jennifer is honored to teach weekly yoga classes, R&R workshops, and serve as a Yoga Therapist at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, MA, the largest yoga center in North America, where she has been teaching for 14 years. Jennifer has been practicing yoga and meditation all her life and has studied formally for 26 years. She has trained in numerous yoga traditions including: Kripalu, Integrative Yoga Therapy, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Forrest, Anusara, Sivanada, Vinyasa (Shiva Rea), Viniyoga, and more. Jennifer practices Vipassana, Zen Buddhism (Thich Nhat Hanh), Contemplative Prayer, yoga nidra and other forms of meditation. Jennifer is a forever student, always seeking to learn and grow from teachers and practices.
